The most important factor in increasing ghrelin is calorie restriction (i.e., dieting). And the stricter the diet, the more ghrelin is produced, making it harder to refuse food. Obesity, on the other hand, is marked by lower ghrelin levels, but a higher potential for its action (ghrelin resistance). It's also worth noting that ghrelin works in tandem with the hormone leptin saturation (which, in turn, is produced directly in adipose tissue).
